Pathogens and diseases Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are four types of pathogen?
Bacteria
Fungi
Protoctista
Virus
What is pathogen?
Microorganism that can cause diseases
What is the kindom of a bacteria?
Prokaryotes
What substance is composed in bacteria cell wall?
Peptidoglygan
How does virus cause disease?
- Invade living cells, where the genetic materials of the virus take over the biochemistry of the host cell to make more viruses
- They reproduce rapidly and evolve by developing adaptations to their host.
- They are known as the ultimate parasites
How does protoctista cause disease?
take over cells and break them open as the new generational emerge, but they do not take over the genetic material of the cell
digest and use the cell contents as they reproduce
Need a vector
How does fungi cause disease?
They digest living cell extracellularly before absorbing the nutrients
Saprophytes - feed on dead living organism
Often affect leaves on plants
produce toxin
How does bacteria cause disease?
Produce toxins that damge the host cells
What is the example for bacterial diseases on plant?
Ring rot
What is the example of virus disease on plant?
Tobacco Moasic Virus (TMV)
What is the example of protoctista disease on plant?
Potato late blight
What is the example of fungi disease on plant?
Black sigatoka
What are the examples of bacterial disease on animal?
Tuberculosis (TB)
Bacterial Meningitis
What is the example of virus disease on animal?
HIV/ AIDS
Influenza (flu)
What is the example of protoctista disease on animal?
Malaria
What is the example of fungal disease on animal?
Ring worm
Athlete’s foot
