Q

What is a fragile state?

A

Fragile states are contexts (regions, countries, or parts of countries) where there is a significant risk of crisis and severely reduced capacity to respond to that risk.
High risk + low capacity to cope = a fragile state.

Q

What is Tamam’s story?

A

Tamam used to live a quiet and comfortable life in Aleppo, Syria, with her family. They had a home in the countryside where they reared goats, cultivated fruit, vegetables and herbs, and had an olive grove.

When conflict came to her village, the family began to lose all they enjoyed. Tamam decided to flee to Lebanon to live alongside around 1 million Syrians escaping the war. They now live in two rooms in a makeshift settlement in a slum area in the middle of Beirut. Life is tough but Tearfund’s partner Tahaddi Education Center is right in the heart of the settlement. Tamam was delighted to join Tahaddi’s sewing programme. There she has learnt a new skill – and passion – in tailoring, which also provides essential income.

While Tamam is grateful for all that Tahaddi and her friends at the sewing programme are doing to make her life in Lebanon much better, her dream is to return home.

Q

What is Aya’s story?

A

Aya is a confident and determined mother of two. She was seven months pregnant when we met her in September 2019. Before the war, Aya had worked hard to build a successful business: a busy shop where she made and sold clothes. She was passionate about
her work and proud of her business and of the house that she and her husband Hassan had created for their family. She loved her home and her village.

But everything changed in 2014. ISIS fighters arrived at one side of the village and forces opposing them
arrived at the other. There were bombs and battles, and Aya’s community was stuck in the middle. She and Hassan fled with their family and were
away for four years. When they came home, they found their home and shop reduced to rubble. Aya says it was like seeing a loved one die in front of her. She felt like
giving up, but, instead, the family put up a tent next to the rubble of their home and set to work rebuilding.

When Tearfund’s staff started livelihoods work in her village, Aya applied for and was awarded a grant. With it, she is starting to rebuild the business that is both her passion and the family’s livelihood. It’s early days – she and the wider community still live among the rubble, and the poverty in the village has increased hugely as a result of the war – but Aya now has hope.
