Ibuprofen (Advil)

Propionic acid; Anti-inflammatory drugs: NSAID

Purpose: antipyretic (blocks prostaglandins), analgesic, antiplatelet

Actions: blocks inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin sythesis by blocking cox 1 & 2

Indomethacin (Indocin)

Anti-inflammatory drugs: NSAIDs

Purpose: antipyretic (blocks prostaglandins), analgesic, antiplatelet; closes PDAs in newborns

Actions: blocks inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin sythesis by blocking cox 1 & 2

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

Analgesic; acetaminophen

Purpose- reduce pain and fever

Action- acts on the hypothalamus to cause vasodilation to reduces fever; cause of reduced pain is unknown

Aurothioglucose (Gold Salts, Aurolate)

Gold compounds; anti-inflammatory drugs: anti-arthritis agents

Purpose- relief of pain and inflammation due to arthritis

Action- macrophages take up gold and inhibits phagocytosis and therefore the inflammatory cascade

Etanercept (Enbril)

DMARDS (disease modifying antirheumatic drug); anti-inflammatory drugs: anti-arthritis agents

Purpose- relief of pain and inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis

Decongestant drugs: topical and oral

Purpose-decrease overproduction of mucus;

Action-sympathomimetic: causes vasoconstriction which decreases edema and inflammation

Decongestant drugs: topical steroid

Purpose – decrease overproduction of mucus, especially in allergic rhinitis

Actions – anti-inflammatory locally

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Antihistamine first generation

Purpose – decrease allergic response

Actions – selective blocking of H1 receptors on CNS and PNS, anti-cholinergic stimulation

Actions – selective blocking of H1 receptors on CNS and PNS, anti-cholinergic stimulation

Expectorant

Purpose – dry cough, relief of excessive mucus respiratory tract

Actions – reduces adhesiveness and surface tension of fluids, draws water into the bronchi, thins secretions; centrally acting muscle relaxant

Mucolytic drug

Purpose – tenacious and viscous mucus removal in high-risk respiratory patients

Actions splits disulfide bonds that hold mucus together

Purpose- bronchodilation/ asthma

Action – beta2 selective adrenergic agonist

Actions – inhibit the release of histamine, effect CA mobilization thereby relaxing smooth muscle

Purpose – treat and prevent airway and lung tissue inflammation

Actions – interfere with the inflammatory cascade and promotes beta-adrenergic receptor activity

Anti-inflammatory: leukotriene receptor antagonist

Purpose – interfere with inflammatory process and the airway, asthma

Actions – blocks the production of leukotrienes

Anti-inflammatory: mast cell stabilizer

Purpose – prevent inflammatory cascade, asthma/allergies

Actions- inhibits the release of histamine and SRS-A from mast cells

Surfactant drug

Purpose – premature infant lung surfactant replacement

Actions – replaces natural lipoproteins in the lungs

Salicylates; anti-inflammatory drug
