Q

How does photosynthesis occur? (Provide the chemical equation)

A

6CO2 + 6H2O ==light energy and chlorophyll==> C6H12O6 + 6O2

1
Q

What is photosynthesis?

A

Photosynthesis is the process where plants convert light energy into energy (glucose). P

2
Q

How is carbon dioxide/oxygen absorbed/released in the process of photosynthesis?

A

Carbon dioxide and oxygen flow through the semi-permeable membrane of the stomata in a leaf through diffusion.

3
Q

What carries water from the roots of a plant and carries the glucose from the leaves to the roots?

A

Xylem in a plant’s trunk or stem are what carries water to the leaves from the roots.
Phloem in a plant’s trunk or stem are what carries glucose to the roots from the leaves.

4
Q

What is the purpose of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?

A

In photosynthesis, chlorophyll is used to absorb the light energy from its source so it can facilitate the chemical reaction.

5
Q

What is cellular respiration?

A

Respiration is a combustion reaction. Respiration is a process which breaks down sugar molecules and in order to convert them into energy. The kind of energy produced is known as ATP.

6
Q

What are the two types of cellular respiration?

A

The two kinds of cellular respiration are:

  • aerobic respiration (with the presence of oxygen)
  • anaerobic respiration (without the presence of oxygen)
7
Q

How does cellular respiration occur? (Provide the chemical equation)

A

6O2 + C6H12O6 =====> 6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP energy

8
Q

What are the two steps of cellular respiration?

A
  1. Glycolysis - breaks down glucose into two pyruvate and gains 2 ATP
  2. Breaking down the pyruvate
9
Q

Why is aerobic respiration more effective than anaerobic respiration?

A

Aerobic respiration fully breaks down the pyruvate producing 36 ATP while anaerobic respiration only partially breaks down the pyruvate producing only 2 ATP.

10
Q

What are the products anaerobic respiration in yeast cells?

A

Alcohol, energy and carbon dioxide.

11
Q

What is the product of anaerobic respiration in human muscle cells?

A

Lactic acid.

12
Q

Where does cellular respiration occur?

A

In eukaryotes, respiration happens mainly in the mitochondria however glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm.
In prokaryotes, respiration occurs in the cytoplasm or inner surfaces of the cell.

13
Q

List three uses of energy stored in ATP.

A

Movement
Growth
Maintaining temperature

14
Q

State two everyday or industrial uses for the anaerobic respiration reaction in yeast cells.

A
Brewing industry (beer)
Baking industry (bread)
