Flashcards in phys6final13 Deck (20):
formed in liver. Transport triglycerides from liver to adipose cells for storage.
Carry cholesterol in blood to cells throughout body for repair and synthesis of steroid hormones & bile
Negative feedback loop starts to stop cell from taking any more LDLs.
LDL also put cholesterol around smooth muscles and arteries. BAD
removes excess cholesterol from cells and blood and takes it to liver for elimination. GOOD
Active transport of amino acid into body cells is stimulated by:
Insulin like growth factor and insulin hormones
Daily protein catabolism is stimulated by:
cortisol hormone (adrenal cortex)
Removal of amino group from amino acid to allow AA to enter Krebs
Bi-product after breakdown of protein. Indication of using too much protein (muscle mass of body)
formation of peptide bonds between amino acids to produce new proteins. Happens in ribosomes.
20 types of AA in body....
10 are essential
vitamins C & B....
must be taken externally (water soluble (hydrophilic)
vitamins A, E, D, K...
fat soluble lipophilic
formation of non-essential AA -- Transfer of an amino group from an amino to pyruvic acid or to an acid in Krebs
How many amino acids occur in nature?
Basal Metabolic state:
body quiet resting and fasting
Basal Metabolic Rate:
(rate of metabolic reactions) 1200 - 1800 calories/day
Total Metabolic Rate:
total energy used by body per day
deep structures & subcutaneous layers
body surface (difference can be 1 - 6 lower than core temperature)
factors affecting metabolic rate & heat production:
exercise, hormones (thyroid, testosterone, insulin, human growth hormone), nervous system (neurotransmitters), body temp (higher = higher metabolic rate), ingestion of food (can raise 10 - 20%), age (younger have higher), others (pregnancy, climate)
