Flashcards in phys6final14 Deck (15):
1

Convection:

Movement of fluid or gas between areas of different temperatures - eg wind chill

2

radiation:

electromagnetic waves from warm to cool - NO contact

3

evaporation:

conversion of liquid to vapour. evaporation of sweat a(not production) cools down the body

4

hypothalamic thermostat:

anterior part of hypothalamus (preoptic area) control centre as body's thermostat

5

hypothalamus:

heat losing centre and heat promoting centre of body

6

thermoregulation:

mechanisms to conserve & increase heat production

7

pyrogen:

substance that elevates hypothalamus

8

feed forward:

small changes in metabolic systems for regulation. No action taken. Eg. body temp is 36.8

9

body temperature raises:

impulses from hypothalamus causes vasodilation that brings blood to surface that makes sweat & radiation. Metabolic rate decreases yet shivering DOES NOT occur

10

hyperthermia:

increase in body temperature...eg. fever, exercise, heat retention

11

heat exhaustion:

loss of fluids because of sweating too much. Decrease blood volume & blood pressure.

12

heat stroke:

heat loss system is failing

13

enteric nervous system:

both SNS & PSNS. Brain of the gut. One million neurons

14

Myenteric plexus:

located between longitudinal & circular smooth muscle layers of GI tract

15

sub mucosal plexus:

within the sub mucosal layer
