Flashcards in phys6final15 Deck (15):
1

Plexuses consist of:

motor neurons, interneurons, sensory neurons

2

Motor neurons

control GI tracts mobility

3

Interneurons

govern co-ordinated activity

4

Sensory neurons

function as chemoreceptors or stretch receptors

5

Digestive System:

SUBJECT HEADING

6

ingestion:

voluntary. When swallowed = bolus;
In stomach = Chyme;
Small intestine = chyle

7

secretion:

7 liters of water, acid, buffers & enzymes into the lumen

8

mixing & propulsion:

propelled by peristalsis. Segmentation more mechanical in small intestines

9

digestion:

Mechanical - movement of primary & secondary organs. Chemical - food broken in building blocks (happens in mouth, pharynx & esophagus

10

absorption:

transport of digested end products from lumen to blood & lympth. SI is major absorb site.

11

defecation:

elimination

12

Enzymes in Saliva:
salivary Amylase:

lingual lipase:

begins starch digestion by breaking down starch into smaller molecules.
breaks down dietary triglycerides into fatty acids & diglycerides

13

Pharynx:

made of muscle & lined with mucous membrane

14

peristaltic mixing waves:

every 15 - 20 seconds in stomach

15

Chyme - soupy liquid

food moves from fundus to pylorus...
each wave moves 3 ml of chime...
called gastric emptying...
food can stay in fundus up to 1 hour
