Flashcards in phys6final16 Deck (14):
Cells in the stomach:
Goblet Cells (surface mucous cells):
Protective barrier. Prevents digestion of stomach wall.
Mucous neck cells:
Secrete mucus that aids in absorption.
secrete hydrochloric acid that kills microbes & converts pepsinogen to pepsin (stomach enzyme) & intrinsic factor needed for absorption of B12.
secrete pepsinogen that is converted to pepsin to break down proteins and gastric lipase that helps split triglycerides
Gastrin (G) cells:
secrete gastrin that stimulates parietal cells to secrete hydrochloric acid and chief cells to secrete pepsinogen.
stomach emptied food into small intestine within 2 - 4 hours.
G : Barrier
Segmentation & peristalsis - controlled by myenteric plexus
Migrating Motility Complex (MMC):
type of peristalsis happens in small intestine.
Digestion completion happens when pandcreatic juice, bile & intestinal juice in small intestine.
Carbohydrates remainders (glycogen & starches) are broken down in small intestine by pancreatic amylase.
Brush border enzyme - acts on cellulose
What is cellulose:
Sugar group. Destination: storage
In intestinal juice splits sugar/sucrose into glucose & fructose. The 2 being absorbed in portal circulation.
intestinal sugar-splitting enzyme converting lactose to dextrose & galactose
