physics chapter 15 Flashcards
(15 cards)
what are magnetic materials
magnetic materials are materials that can be attracted to a magnet
what are non magnetic materials
non magnetic materials are materials that cannot be attracted to a magnet
what are some examples of magnetic material
steel, iron, cobalt, nickel
what are some examples of non magnetic material
copper, wood, plastic, brass
what are the uses of magnets
compasses, school lab experiments, toys, fridge magnets
what is a magnetic induction
magnets are made by magnetising magnetic materials. the process of magnetising a material is also known as magnetic induction
how is the induced magnet formed
when an unmatched paper clip us brought near the bar magnet, it is attracted to the magnet. when this happens we say that that the paper clip has become an induced magnet
what are the two type of magnets
permanent and temporary
describe the temporary magnet
An induced magnet is a material with a soft iron core that becomes a magnet temporarily when it is placed in a magnetic field
Induced magnetism always causes a force of attraction between the permanent magnet creating the magnetic field and the induced magnet
describe the permanent magnet
Permanent magnets are made out of permanent magnetic materials, for example, steel
A permanent magnet will produce its own magnetic field
It will not lose its magnetism
what are the uses of temporary magnets
electromagnets, maglev trains
what are the uses of permanent magnets
magnetic door catches, maglev trains
what is a magnetic field
every magnet has a region of space around it called the magnetic field
what is a magnetic field pattern
the arrangement of a group of magnetic field lines is called a magnetic field patterns
how can we visualise the magnetic field of a magnet
a magnetic field is invisible, to visualise the pattern and direction of the magnetic field around a bar magnet, we can use a plotting compass
