When the body is lying face upward
Supine Position
When the body is lying face down
Prone Position
When the body is upright, directly facing the observer, feet flat and directed forward. The upper limbs are at the body’s sides with the palms facing forward.
Anatomical Position
At or near the front of the body.
Anterior view
At or near the back of the body.
Posterior view
Imaginary ventricular line dividing the body equally.
Midline
Toward the head, upper part of a structure.
Superior view
Away from the head, lower part of a structure.
Inferior
Farther from midline.
Lateral
Nearer to midline.
Medial
Nearer to the origination of a structure.
Proximal
Farther from the origination a structure.
Distal
Close to the structure of the body.
Superficial
Away from the surface of the body.
Deep
Divides the body into front and back portions.
Frontal (coronal) plane
Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
Transverse plane
Passes through a structure or the entire body at an angle.
Oblique plane
Divides a structure or the body vertically into right or left portions.
Sagittal plane
Divides the body vertically into equal right and left sides.
Midsagittal
Divides the body vertically into unequal right and left sides.
