Population Growth Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is birth rate?
The number of live babies born per thousand of the population per year
Is the world population increasing?
Yes.
The rate at which it’s increasing is getting faster and faster
What is death rate?
The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year
What is natural increase?
When the birth rate is higher than the death rate
What is natural decrease?
When the death rate is higher than the birth rate
How many stages are there in the DTM
5
What does the DTM show?
The 5 stages of population growth
Explain stage 1
High and fluctuating birth and death rate
Zero population growth
Low and steady population size
Example country for stage 1
Some tribes in Brazil
No countries
Explain stage 2
High and steady birth rate
Rapidly falling death rate
Very high population growth rate
Rapidly increasing population size
Explain stage 3
Rapidly falling birth rate
Slowly falling death rate
High population growth rate
Increasing population size
Example country for stage 2
Egypt
Example country for stage 3
Egypt
Explain stage 4
Low and fluctuating birth and death rate
Zero population growth
High and steady population size
Example country for stage 4
UK
Explain stage 5
Slowly falling birth rate
Low and steady death rate
Negative population growth
Slowly falling population size
Example country for stage 5
Japan
In detail explain stage 1
High birth rate as no contraception and lots of infants die
High death rate as poor healthcare or famine
Mostly young people as low life expectancy
In detail explain stage 2
High birth rate as no contraception and economy based in agriculture means children are needed to help on farms
Falling death rate as improved healthcare and diet
Still more young people than old people
Explain in detail stage 3
Rapidly falling birth rate as women have more equal place in society and education and contraception use increases.
Economy now focused on manufacturing so children aren’t needed for farm work
Death rate falls due to medical advancements
More people live in to be older
Explain in detail stage 4
Low birth rate - people want more possessions - less money to bring up child
High life expectancy - people live to be older
Explain in detail stage 5
Slowly falling death rate as people have dependent elderly parents so less money to raise child
Death rate low as lots of medical advancements
More older than younger people
How is overpopulation caused and what is it?
Caused by rapid population growth where there are too many people for the resources
Where does overpopulation occur?
LEDC in stages 2/3 of DTM as they have high population growth
