List the key dates from 1700- 1967 regarding prisons.

A

1700s- prisons were mainly used for debtors.
1823- Gaols Act, Paid wardens, inspectors and chaplains.
1842- Pentonville prison opened.
1865- Prisons act hard labour, hard board, hard fare deter
1902- hard labour and the crank were abolished.
1932- Education oppoutunities were offered.
1934- Open prisons were introduced
1967- parole was introduced.

Regarding capital punishments; describe how it changed?

A

1700s- Bloody Code.
1830s- Bloody code abolished. CP continued for murder and treason- hangings were done in private and in prisons.
1868- Las public hanging
1965- Cap punishment suspended for 5 years.
1969- Capital punishment were abolished for murder.

What were the problems with prisons that led to change?

A

Silent and separate systems were too lenient, expensive and they took up too much space as they provided each prisoner with a separate accommodation. so Prisons act hard labour was introduced with pointless work such as crank to help deter.
