Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
Structure
Cytoplasm lacks membrane-bound organelles
Smaller ribosomes (70 S)
No nucleus , no histone proteins- free-floating circular DNA
Cell wall contains murein (a glycoprotein)
Plasma membrane mainly made up of lipids and proteins
Plasmids are small loops of DNA
Flagella
Plasmid
Small loop of DNA that is separate from the main DNA that contain genes that can be passed between prokaryotic such as the antibiotic resistant gene
Capsule
Surrounded by a final outer layer known as a capsule to help protect bacteria from dying by attack cells of the immune system
Flagellum
Long, hair like structure that rotates enabling movement
Binary Fission
Circular DNA & plasmids undergo DNA replication
Parent cell divides into two (cytoplasm is roughly halved)
Two daughter cells contain:
Single copy of circular DNA
Varied amount of plasmids (although this is regulated)
