Role of unconscious
‘conscious mind’ = tip of iceburg
most of mind is made up on unconscious mind
(biological drive, instincts, disturbing memories that have been locked + repressed)
Preconscious= slip of tongue (calling teacher mum)
Structure of personality
ID - Operates on pleasure principle, unconscious mind + instincts (selfish + demands instant gratification)
EGO - reality principle, middle, reduce conflict between id and superego
SUPEREGO - Formed at end of phallic stage, based on morality principle
Psychosexual stage
Psychosexual conflict, unresolved leads to fixation, child becomes “stuck”, carries certain behaviour + conflict in adult stage

Oral
Pleasure in mouth, mothers breast desire
oral fixation- smoking, biting nails ,sarcastic
Anal
Focus of pleasure is the anus
pleasure withholding + expelling faeces
Anal retentive - perfectionist
Anal expulsive - messy
Phallic
Focus of pleasure in genital area
Oedipus or Electra complex
Phallic personality - narcissistic, possibly homosexuals
Latency
Earlier conflicts repressed
Genital
Sexual desires become conscious alongside puberty
difficult forming heterosexual relationships
Defence mechanism
Helps balance superego + ID demands
Unconscious + ensure ego does not overwhelm by threats or trauma
Often involve distortion of reality + long-term solutions = psychologically unhealthy
Repression
Forcing a distressing memory out of conscious mind
Denial
refusing acknowledge some aspect of reality
displacement
transferring feelings from true source of distressing emotion onto substitute target
