Q

Heated High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)

A

an oxygen supply system capable of delivering up to 100% humidified and heated oxygen at a flow rate of up to 60 liters per minute.

Venti Mask

A

also known as an air-entrainment mask, is a medical device to deliver a known oxygen concentration to patients on controlled oxygen therapy.

Q

Non-rebreather

A

A non-rebreather mask is a device used in medicine to assist in the delivery of oxygen therapy. A NRB requires that the patient can breathe unassisted, but unlike a low-flow nasal cannula, the NRB allows for the delivery of higher concentrations of oxygen.

Q

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

A

CPAP supplies constant fixed positive pressure throughout inspiration and expiration.

It, therefore, is not a form of ventilation, but splints the airways open.

If delivered with oxygen, it can allow a higher degree of inspired oxygen than other oxygen masks.

Q

BiPAP

A

A bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP or BPAP) machine normalizes breathing by delivering pressurized air into the upper airway that leads to the lungs. Its bilevel design means that a BiPAP device provides two different levels of air pressure: one for breathing in and one for breathing out.

A BiPAP machine is one type of positive airway pressure (PAP) device. PAP therapy is frequently used to treat sleep apnea, a condition involving repeated pauses or disruptions in breathing during sleep.

Q

Incentive Spirometer (IS)

A

The incentive spirometer is a mechanical hand-held breathing device in which the patient is instructed to take slow deep breaths through the device’s mouthpiece. The device gives the patient visual feedback on the volume of the inhalation.

Q

Flutter Valve

A

A flutter valve is a small, handheld device that is used to help clear mucus from the lungs. It’s the most common type of oscillatory PEP therapy and is commonly used in patients with cystic fibrosis.
The device is triangular-shaped with a fluttering steel ball inside.

When you exhale into the flutter valve against backpressure, the ball rattles and creates high-frequency oscillations. This action helps to break up the mucus so it can be cleared more easily.

Q

iNO

A

Inhaled nitric oxide

Continuous treatment for pulmonary HTN

Inhalation of nitric oxide by patients with severe adult respiratory distress syndrome reduces the pulmonary-artery pressure and increases arterial oxygenation by improving the matching of ventilation with perfusion, without producing systemic vasodilation.
