Define: reflex actions

inborn automatic involuntary behaviours that occur in response to an environmental cue and in the same way each time

Palmar grasp/sucking/stepping/withdrawal reflex

Define: palmar grasp reflex

when a finger is put in the palm of an infant’s hand, it will immediately grasp the finger – to prepare the infant for voluntary grasping.

Define: sucking reflex

when a finger is placed in the infants mouth, the infant sucks the finger rhythmically – this permits feeding.

Define: stepping reflex

when an infant is held with bare feet touching a flat surface, it will life one foot then another – to prepare the infant for voluntary walking.

Define: withdrawal reflex

when sole of foot is pricked with a pin, the foot withdraws – to protect it from unpleasant tactile stimulation.
