What are some aspects of successful regions?
• Attract people, workers and investment
• Good transport and technological infrastructure
• Few areas suffering high deprivation

• Lower rates of investment, higher rates of deprivation and deindustrialisation
• Negative perceptions is long standing, passed down generations
• Increased unhappiness, less motivation

What are some factors affecting attachment to place?
• Length of residence= stronger opinion of place (either positive or negative).
• Gender= Perception of safety may differ, some workplaces dominated by one gender.
• Stage of life= Young adults may prefer locations with close by work, shops and facilities. Older people and young families may prefer more secluded space.
• Memories.
• Studentification= can affect attachment based on preference.
• Ethnicity= migrants may have increased attachment if moving to a place with a diaspora.

What is gentrification?
The process that sees low income groups displaced by affluent people
What is a sink estate?
Housing estate with high levels of deprivation and crime, especially domestic crime, drugs and gang warfare
What is a gated community?
Individual buildings or groups of houses which have CCTV and sometimes security guards
What are commuter villages?
Settlements where a large proportion of the population of the residents commute daily to cities for work
What are declining rural settlements?
Rural areas where the quality of life and deprivation are worsening
What are some key notes about fracking in the UK?
Extraction near Blackpool had supplied shale gas, but due to the combination of NIMBYism and safety concerns, there was a nationwide ban in 2019

What is a rising housing need caused by?
Increasing population, lack of affordable housing
What has deregulation of capital markets done for the UK?
The London Stock Exchange lost share dealings, so individuals could invest freely. Foreign investors could now invest in the UK
How has the UK attracted high skill immigrants?
A point based immigration system aims to do this by giving points for aspects such as having a PHD
What is a negative of cruise ship tourism for locals?
Less money goes into the local economy, as tourists spend it on the cruise ship. A problem for the Giants Causeway
