Flashcards in Regulation of Gastric Motility and Secretions Deck (12):
1

What is the Cephalic phase?

In your brain and your head
-initiated in your head when you are thinking about food and the digestive tract starts to change and you start to salivate

2

What is the Stimulus for the cephalic phase?

Sight, smell and taste of food

3

What are the neural controls for the cephalic phase?

Increased Secretions:
-Slaivary glands (Saliva)
-Stomach (HCl)
-Intestines(Mucus)

Increased motility of stomach and small intestine

4

What is the Gastric phase?

When food makes it into the stomach where motions and secretions are triggered

5

What is the stimulus of the gastric phase?

Presence of a bolus in the stomach causing stretching

Presence of amino acids (strong signal for the digestive phase to go)

6

What is the neural control of the gastric phase?

Sensory info to the submucosal plexus (secretions) and to the myenteric plexus (motility)
-short phase, info not going up all the way to the brian

7

What is the hormonal control of the gastric phase ?

Gastrin is released when G cells are activated to cause:
-increase in secretions (HCl, mucus)
-increase in motility (stomach and increase gastric emptying)

8

What is the intestinal phase?

Where food starts to get into the small intestine

Small intestine controls gastric phase

9

What is the stimulus of the gastric phase?

Presence of chyme in the intestine

10

What is the neural control of the intestinal phase?

Sensory info to the submucosal plexus (secretions) and the myenteric plexus (motility)

11

What its the hormonal control of intestinal phase?

Secretions: secretin from s cells, CCK from CCK cells, GIP K cells

increased secretions from
-intestines (mucus)
-Pancrease (bicarbonate, digestive enzymes, insulin)

Increased motility from
-intestines (peristalsis and segmentation)
-Gallbladder contraction

decrease secretions from
-stomach (HCl_

Decreased motility of
-stomach and decreased gastric emptying

12

Why do we see a decrease in secretions and motility from he stomach in the intestinal phase?

So intestine feels like it has enough time to do its job
