Relationships between the 2 cycles Flashcards

Rain
If on deforested land = soil erosion
If soil and ash flows into rivers = increases carbon content.
Water leaves as an output through stemflow due to reduced interception and increased runofficial. = could cause desertification.
High temps = forest migration of animals.
Reduced rain = less evapotranspiration = drought periods and intact rainforest to deteriorate.
Deforistation on peatlands and digging of drainage channels:
Reduces water storage.
Organic peat matter no longer preserved underwater and decomposes quickly, releasing CO2.
Weathering and erosion increase = decompostion = greater wildfire risk due to hotter temps.
Blocking of drainage ditches in peatland rainforests:
Increase soil water storage and decrease runoff = raise water table and decrease flood risk
More likely to attract wildlife = important habitat.
Carbon storgae is also increased as peat is made up of carbon and water
