Big Bang theory

The Big Bang theory is the leading scientific explanation for the beginning of the Universe. This suggests that the universe began as an incredibly small and dense point, known as a singularity, which started to expand over 13.8 billion years ago. As this expanded and cooled, gases formed and then matter which formed stars and galaxies.

• Scientists argue that if there is anything which remains unexplained then science will eventually be able to explain it. There is no need to make up a God to explain things.

Fundamentalist Christians or creationists

Answer 2

Fundamentalist Christians argue that the world was created by God in six days as it says in the Bible. Some of them may explain that the six days might mean six longer measurements of time, but they still believe that God created plants, animals and people exactly as they are. These people are called “creationists”.

• They say that

1. God wouldn’t lie in the Bible
2. When he created the universe “it was good” so why would there need to be evolution? Nothing would need to change if it was already perfect!
3. They explain away the “physical evidence” – for example they argue that there are lots of dinosaur fossils because all the dinosaurs drowned in Noah’s flood.
