Reserach Methods Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are the 7 steps to psychological research
- Formulating the research question ( identification )
- Constructing a hypothesis
- Designing a study
- Processing data
- Analysing data
- Interpreting the results
- Writing the research report
What is the acronym for research steps
I - identify Have - hypothesis Made - method Cake - collecting data And - analysis I - interpreting Rock - reporting
The different variables?
Independent variable - the variable that is manipulated or changed
Dependant variable - the variable that is used to measure or changed that effects the IV
Controlled variable - stays the same
Extraneous variable - the errors or mistakes
Participant variable - indivual differences in personal characteristics among research participants such as age, sex, religion, cultural background, intelligence
Experimenter variable - personal characteristics of the experimenter
The types of data
Quantitative - numbers
Qualitative - words
What is data
Information gathered using scientific research methods
What is empirical evidence
Empirical evidence - the data collected through objective and measure
What is are samples?
Is a subsection of the larger population
What is a population
Is the entire group of the research interest from which the sample is drawn
What is stratified sampling?
A technique used to ensure the sample includes all relevant subgroups of the population in appropriate proportions
What is opportunity sampling?
A sample by recruiting participants who are readily available
What is random allocation ?
Randomly selected participants for the experimental group or controlled group
What is the experimental group ?
The group under the independent or experimental conditions
What is the controlled group ?
The group not under independent or experimental conditions
What is the research Method?
A particular way of conducting a research study to obtain accurate and reliable data
What is a representative sample?
Approximately the same as the population in every important respect, and therefor is assumed to be free from bias
What’s are ethics
Moral principles that guide individuals to distinguish between right and wrong
What are the ethical codes?
Informed consent
Voluntary participation
Deception
Debriefing
Withdrawal
Confidentiality
What is the scientific method
The step by step approach to planning, conducting and reporting research
What is the hypothesis
A tentative, testable prediction of the possible relationship between two or more variables
Define data
Information about qualities or characteristics of what is being studied
