respiratory emergencies Flashcards
(11 cards)
In COPD exacerbations and acute coronary syndromes what should oxygen be?
Carefully Titrated
After Oxygen, a patient suffering from an asthma attack should be given what?
Bronchodilators
What can bronchodilators be divided into?
Selective agents and non selective agents
What do selective agents (bronchodilators) do?
Act preferentially on the bronchial smooth muscle and improve the patients condition while minimising side effects
What are some side effects of salbutamol?
Tachycardia
Tremours
Palpitations
headache
muscle cramps
rash
What side effects can happen with ipratropium bromide?
Dry mouth
nausea
tachycardia
arrythmia (irregular)
allergic reaction
What are Beta 2 agonists?
Sympathomimetic medications that target the beta2 receptors and cause relaxation of the smooth muscle without tachycardia or hypertension
What do non selective agents (bronchodilators) act on?
Act on alpha, beta 1, and beta 2 adrenergic receptors. Stimulation of the aplha receptors causes constriction of peripheral blood vessels and results in an increase in blood pressure.
When stimulated what do beta 1 receptors do?
Located in the cardiac tissue, increase heart rate and cardiac contractility.
What is an example of a non selective bronchodilator?
Adrenaline
