Q

ASTHMA

What is it?
What advice would you give a client?
What EOs would be appropriate?
What would you prepare and how would you advise them to use EOs?

A

Reversible narrowing of bronchioles causing difficulty on expiration particularly. 2 types:
Intrinsic - familial link & w/ eczema, hayfever etc.
Extrinsic - reaction to chemicals, exercise, cold weather etc
Treatment depends on several factors but BRONCHODILATORS always useful
Allergy-related? - ANTIALLERGENICS, ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES
Infection present? - ANTISPASMODICS, EXPECTORANTS, MUCOLYTICS
Stress/emotions related? - NERVINES, CALMATIVES, SEDATIVES
Caution with more pungent EOs in steam inhalation, inhaler sticks may be beneficial.

PLAI - Bronchodilatory
CEDARWOOD ATLAS - mucolytic, tonic
HELICHRYSUM - antiallergenic, antispasmodic

BRONCHITIS - ACUTE, CHRONIC

What is it?
What advice would you give a client?
What EOs would be appropriate?
What would you prepare and how would you advise them to use EOs?

A

ACUTE - Bronchial lining inflames, severe coughing with coloured mucus. Infection & fever contraindicates massage - inhalations, room vapouriser, baths, chest rubs w/ ANTIBACTERIAL, EXPECTORANT, MUCOLYTIC, IMMUNE STIMULANT
E. GLOBULUS, TEA TREE, CEDARWOOD ATLAS

CHRONIC - Repeated infections may lead to chronic inflammation of bronchi, chronic mucosal clogging destroys lung tissue & O2-CO2 exchange decreases -> poor oxygenation. Can be caused by long term smoking or other pollutants. Massage is helpful.
ANTISPASMODIC, EXPECTORANT, MUCOLYTIC, RESPIRATORY TONICS & ANTIMICROBIALS as needed
CEDARWOOD ATLAS, BLACK SPRUCE, PINE

INFLUENZA

What is it?
What advice would you give a client?
What EOs would be appropriate?
What would you prepare and how would you advise them to use EOs?

A

Viral infection causing fever & cold-like respiratory symptoms & musculoskeletal aches.
Home treatment in acute stage w/ ANTIVIRALS, IMMUNE STIMULANTS, EXPECTORANTS & antibacterials if secondary infections.
Inhalations, vapourisations, baths, chest rubs - acute stage oils need to reflect presenting symptoms.
Full recovery can take 6 weeks - physical & emotional. Depletion often occurs, as can depression & fatigue.
IMMUNE BOOSTERS & EUPHORICS can be helpful.

If catch early enough bath w/ TEA TREE, BERGAMOT, BLACK PEPPER can help ward off infection

E. radiata - antiviral, febrifuge, immune stimulant
Black pepper - immune stimulant, antiviral, febrifuge
Tea tree - anti microbial, antiviral, expectorant, immune stimulant

What is it?
What advice would you give a client?
What EOs would be appropriate?
What would you prepare and how would you advise them to use EOs?

blocked nose, sinuses, sore throat, headaches, chest congestion, shivering, feverishness

Home treatments while active symptoms matching oils to presentations.
ANTIVIRALS, DECONGESTANTS, MUCOLYTICS, EXPECTORANTS, ANALGESICS
Via Inhalation, room vapourisers, baths, chest rubs

If constantly prone to infections consider why - Stress? Diet? etc

Can be viral, bacterial, often accompanies other cold-like symptoms so treat as it presents.
ANTIVIRALS, ANTIBACTERIALS, ANALGESICS, ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES, DEMULCENTS
