We are to use the literal method rather than the allegorical. The liberal method means to follow the natural or usual implication of an expression- the ordinary and apparent meaning of the words.
- Explain literal interpretation and who were/are its main proponents.
Augustine believed in the allegory of interpreting scripture until the fifth century. He then believed in the allegory interpretation of scripture only for prophecy and the Literal method for everything.
- Explain the Allegorical interpretation of scripture, it’s beginning and major proponents today.
Allegorical interpretation of scripture has no keys within the text to say that it means something else.
Alexandrian Jews were the first allegorized with the Old Testament then it was adopted by Christian theologians in the New Testament.
- Explain the difference between figurative and allegorical language:
Figurative gives the keys for interpreting itself. It is meant to be understood in the context, or is defined in some other place. Allegorical has no key within the text to say that it means something else.
