Flashcards in Rhabdoviridae Deck (13):
What are the major characteristics of rhabdoviruses? (ss/ds, RNA/DNA, env/non-env, pos/neg)
Enveloped (-) ssRNA viruses
What is the general shape of a rhabdovirus?
"rhabdos" means "rod"
Name the most famous rhabdovirus.
What are the five proteins encoded by rhabdoviruses?
L --RNA-dep RNA polymerase
G -- surface antigen
N -- RNA BP
NS -- phosphoprotein
M -- membrane/matrix
How is rabies virus transmitted?
via bites of infected animals to warm blooded animals
Can be aerosols, bites, and scratches
What is the rabies virus reservoir?
USA = cats
world = dogs
About how many people receive prophylactic treatment for Rabies in the US each year?
Describe the path of Rabies virus through the body.
Initial replication = muscle and CT
Incubation period = weeks to months
Acute syndrome = peripheral nerves and then the CNS
What are some clinical symptoms of Rabies virus?
Prodrome (traveling through CNS) = nausea, headaches, fever, sore throat, photophobia
Acute phase (Infection of brain) = anxiety, confusion, agitation, hyper salivation, hydrophobia, hallucinations, difficulty swallowing
Coma = seizures and death
How do we diagnose Rabies?
PCR and histology (post-mortem)
ELISA (very late)
What are we looking for with IHC/ICC during Rabies virus infection?
Negri-bodies = inclusions seen in bodies/processes of certain nerve cells
Is there a Rabies vaccine? If so, what type?
yes, it is an inactivated vaccine grown in a human fibroblast cell line
