Flashcards in Rivers Definitions Deck (33):
1

Source

The Beginning of a river.

2

Mouth

The end of a river.

3

Drainage basin

The area of land drained by a river and it's tributaryes.

4

tributary

A smaller river that joing a bigger river.

5

Confluence

Where two rivers join.

6

hydrological cycle

The continous movement of water trough the atmosphere, earth, and across the land.

7

precipitation

water falling from the atmosphere

8

Interception

when precipitation is cought by vegeation or human built structures.

9

Infiltration

when water travels from the surface to the ground below

10

surface run-off

when water travels on the surace

11

Troughflow

when water travels trough unsaturated

12

watershed

The division between two drainage basins

13

Corrosion (Abrasion)

The process of river loads crashing and rubbing into river banks and bed causing bits to break off.

14

Corrosion (Solution)

The process of water dissolvin a river's loads, banks, and bed.

15

Attrition

Load crashing into eachother in a river.

16

Hydraulic Action

water and air getting into cracks of the river causing banks and bed errosion trough increased pressure.

17

Deposition

When a river doesn't have enough energy, it deposits it's load.

18

Traction

The process of large pieces of load rolling along a river bed.

19

Saltation

the process of large bits of load bouncing along a river bed

20

Suspension

The process of fine particles of load bein carried down a river by the water.

21

Solution

Minerals are disolved in water. This is a chemical change.

22

Floatation

The process of material being transported on top of the water down the river.

23

Load

Things transported by a river

24

Waterfall

Place where river falls vertically

25

Gorge

Deep valley where waterfall retreats

26

Rapids

Turbulent section of a river, created by places with hard and soft rock, making river bed uneven, making the river turbulent.

27

Meander

bend in river

28

Oxbow Lake

Oxbow lakes are created when two meanders join.

29

Pothole

Holes found in the river bed created by vertical erosion.

30

V-Shaped valley

When a river erodes vertically in the upper parts of the river creating a valley in the form of a v with the river in the middle

31

Floodplain

area of land that the water flow to in case it overflows from a river.

32

Delta

Where the river meets the sea, created when it decreases velocity.

33

Levee

when a river flood, it deposits a lot of it's load on the sides of the river. A built up of these can be very strong and is called a Levee.
