Flashcards in Rocks Deck (11):
1

The formation of igneous rocks

Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.

2

distinguish between extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks

Extrusive - rocks cooled above the surface of the earth
Intrusive - Cooled under the earth

3

Explain how cooling rate affects crystal size

When it cools quickly, there is not enough time
for large crystals to form. The rocks formed from lava that cools more slowly have larger crystals.

4

Describe the formation of sedimentary rocks.

Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediment is deposited out of air, ice, wind, gravity, or water flows carrying the particles in suspension.

5

Explain the role of water in the formation of sedimentary rocks

Water transports the matter from streams and rivers and it gets deposited in the seas and oceans. The sediment settles out on the sea floor and there is where it forms.

6

Describe the roles of heat and pressure in the formation of metamorphic rocks

Heat and pressure are what cause an igneous or sedimentary rock to change form to metamorphic. The heat makes the rock soft and the pressure changes its atomic structure, making a new material

7

Explain how layers of sedimentary and other rocks, together with fossils, reveal information about past environments and life on earth

Layers of sedimentary and other rocks can reveal past disasters and events, and fossils can reveal what plant life and animal life may have lived there

8

describe the physical properties of a variety of minerals

Cleavage, fracture, hardness, lustre, streak

9

outline the use of fossil evidence for investigating dinosaurs and their behaviour

The use of fossil evidence for investigating dinosaurs & their behaviour is that we can know what the dinosaurs looked like, what they hunted and how they lived

10

Explain the role of water in the formation of sedimentary rocks

Water transports the matter from streams and rivers and it gets deposited in the seas and oceans. The sediment settles out on the sea floor and there is where it forms.

11

What are all rocks made of?

Minerals
