What is the ICO, and do private practice counsellors need to register with it?
The ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) is the UK’s data protection regulator. Any counsellor in private practice who stores client data electronically (e.g., for notes, emails, or appointments) is legally required to register with the ICO and pay an annual fee.
What should a counsellor consider when setting their fees for private practice?
They should consider their level of experience, geographic location, overhead costs (like room hire, insurance, supervision), and what local competitors are charging. Many also offer a sliding scale or concessionary rates.
What is ‘contracting’ in the first counselling session?
Contracting is the process of setting out the terms of the therapeutic relationship. This includes practicalities like fees, session times, cancellation policies, and communication boundaries, as well as the limits of confidentiality.
