Flashcards in Science chemistry Deck (15):
1

Chemical reaction

A process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances into a new set of substances. OR the process when atoms of a particle rearrange to produce different particles

2

Reactant

A substance that is consumed in the course of a chemical reaction

3

Product

A substance that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction

4

Spontaneous reaction

a reaction that occurs at room temperature and does not require any energy to get it started

5

Law of conservation of mass

Total mass of reactants
=
Total mass of products

6

Decomposition reaction

Any reaction in which a more complex compound is broken down into simpler chemicals( elements and/or compounds)
AB-> A + B

7

Examples of decomposition reaction

Copper extracted from chalcopyrite.
Aluminium extracted from bauxite.
Iron extracted from haematite

8

Synthesis Reaction

Any reaction in which 2 or more simpler chemicals ( elements or compounds) react to form a more complex chemical
A + B --> AB

9

Examples of a synthesis reaction

Corrosion:
Metal + oxygen
-->
Metal oxide iron + oxygen
-->
Iron oxide(rust)

10

Single displacement reaction

A reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound
A + BC --> B + AC

11

Example of a single displacement reaction

Thermite:
Aluminium + Iron oxide
--->
Aluminium oxide + iron

12

Double displacement reaction

A reaction in which 2 compounds react to form 2 new compounds.
AB + CD
-->
AD + CB

13

Example of a double displacement reaction

Precipitation reaction:
A specific reaction in which soluble substances react to produce and insoluble product

14

Polymer

A large molecule made up of repeating units

15

Name a polymer

Water bottle
Plastic bags
PVC pipe
Nylon
Cellulose
Starch
