Flashcards in Section 1 - Rivers (The Hydrological Cycle) Deck (16):
1

Name the 4 types of water storage

•channel storage
•groundwater storage
•interception storage
•surface storage

2

What is infiltration?

When water soaks into the soil

3

What is percolation?

When water moves vertically down through soil and rock

4

What is through flow?

When water in the soil flows downhill

5

What is ground water flow?

When water in the rock flows downhill

6

What is surface runoff?

When water flows overground

7

What is channel flow?

The flow of water in a river

8

What is channel storage?

When water is held in a river

9

What is groundwater storage?

When water is stored underground in soil and rock

10

What is an aquifer?

A rock that stores water

11

What is interception storage?

When water (precipitation) lands on things and doesn't hit the ground, ex. trees

12

What is storage surface?

When water is held in things like lakes, reservoirs and puddles

13

How does water leave the cycle?

•evaporation
•transpiration
Combined is evapotranspiration

14

How does water enter the cycle?

Precipitation (wind moves the evaporation inland to form a cloud and the water condenses to form rain)

15

Name the 3 areas in the hydro cycle

•land
•sea
•atmosphere

16

Name the 7 types of water transfer/flow

•infiltration
•percolation
•through flow
•groundwater flow
•surface runoff
•channel flow
•movement of water vapour by wind
