The choice of subjunctive tense depends on the time of action if the main verb
- Action in the present or the future
- Action considered counterfactual proposition of strong doubt.
- Action is in the past timeframe up to the present whose influence is still in effect.
- Action that is viewed as prior to some other action in the past.

I pray to God that John comes to the party.
Ojalá que Juan venga a la fiesta.
( Present subjunctive)

I wish to God John were coming to the party.
Ojalá que Juan viniera a la fiesta.
( Imperfect Subjunctive )
Action is in the post timeframe to the present whose influence is still in effect

Ojalá que Juan haya venido a la fiesta.
( Present perfect subjunctive )
Action that is viewed as prior to some of the action in the past.
I wish to God that Juan had come to the party.
Ojalá que Juan hubiera venido a las fiesta
( Pluperfect subjunctive)
