Rural depopulation
Decrease in population fo rural areas by out-migration or falling birth rate as young people move away, usually to urban areas
Urbanisation of poverty
Increasing concentration of poverty in urban areas in developing countries due to high levels of rural-urban migration
Urban revolution
Major change in the form and growth of settlements due to significant technological advance

An increasing proportion of the population in a geographical area lives in urban settlements

Absolute increase in physical size and total population of urban areas
Suburbanisation
Outward growth of towns and cities to engulf surrounding villages and rural areas
Reurbanisation
After a clear period of decline, the population of a city, in particular the inner area, begins to increase again.

Mapping exercise by local government which decides how land should be used in the various parts of a town or city
Gentrification
Wealthier people move into, renovate and restore run-down housing in an inner city/neglected area. Such housing was formerly inhabited by low-income groups, with tenure shifting from private rented to owner occupied.
World/global city
A city that is an important nodal point in the global economic system
Bid rent theory
Decreasing accessibility moving from the centre of and urban area, with corresponding declining land values, allowing an offering of land uses related to rent affordability.
Deindustrialisation
The long term absolute decline of employment in manufacturing
Post industrial city
A city whose economy is dominated by services and new high-tech industries
Constrained location theory
Identifies the problems encountered by manufacturing firms in congested cities, particularly in inner areas
Self-help housing initiatives
Partnerships between communities and local government whereby local government frequently supplies building materials and the community supplies the labour.
