Seminal vesicle

Pair of glandular pouches that lie one on either side of the male reproductive tract and in the human male secrets a sugar and protein containing fluid into the enjaculatory duct

5

Prostate gland

Organ found in men/male animals, produces liquid in which sperm is carried. Gland increases in size and can develop cancer

6

Cowper’s gland

Two small glands lying on either side of male urethra below prostrate gland. Discharges sécrétion into semen that neutralizes conditions inside urethra

7

Vas deferens

Sperm carrying duct in the male. Begins at epididymis, eventually joins the duct if the seminal vesicle to for pm the ejaculatory duct

8

Testis

Male reproductive glands, produce sperm and secretes testosterone. Contained in the scrotum

9

Epididymis

System of ducts leading from testis that holds sperm during maturation before uniting into the vas deferens

10

Testicular cancer

Usually occurring between ages 15-35

11

Ovaries

Two organs in women/female animals that produce eggs and female hormones

12

Ovum

Female egg cell

13

Uterus

Organ in women in which babies develop before birth

14

Monogamy

One mutually faithful sexual partner

15

Verticale transmission (HIV)

Spreading disease from mother to baby

16

Ovulation

One egg leaving a women’s ovary once a month

17

Fallopian tubes

Either of the pair of tubes that carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus

18

Endometrium

Mucous membrane lining the uterus

19

Menstruation

Discharging of blood, secretions, and tissue debris from the uterus that occurs when women’s egg is not fertilized

20

Cervix

Narrow end at the opening of a women’s uterus

21

Toxic shock syndrome

Serious illness that is caused by bacteria and occurs especially in women who use tampons

22

Fertilization

Union of egg and sperm

23

Embryo

Developing human individual from the time implantation to the end of the eighth week after conception

24

Amniotic sac

Membrane forming a fluid-filled cavity that encloses the embryo

25

Umbilical cord

Long narrow tube that connects an unborn baby to the placenta of its mother

26

Prenatal care

Relating to pregnant women and their unborn babies

27

Amniocentesis

Test of amniotic fluid to check the health of the baby before he/she is born

28

Mammogram

Photograph of women’s breasts made by x-rays. Used to check fro abnormal growth lumps

29

Pandemic vs epidemic

Pandemic = world wide spread of a disease
Epidemic = regional outbreak of disease

30

Sterility

Inability to conceive

31

Progestin

Synthetic progesterone that stops ovulation and increases cervical mucus

32

Progesterone

Female sex hormone that prepares the endometrium for implantation of the newly fertilized egg

33

Estrogen

Hormone that is responsible for development of female secondary sex characteristics and promote the growth and maintenance of the female reproductive system

34

Oxytocin

Stimulates especially the contraction of the uterine muscle and he secretion of milk

35

Follicle stimulating hormone

Hormone that stimulates growth of the ovum-containing follicles in the ovary and that activates sperm-forming cell

36

Human chorionic gonadotropic hormone

Hormone produced by cells that surround the growing human embryo; these cells will eventually go on to form the placenta
