Transmitted fecal-oral route

Commonly affects children under 5, infection peaks late in summer in UL

Clinical presentation of shigellosis?

A

1-3 days after infection get diarrhoea (may be blood/mucus), N&V, abdo pain, fever, malalse

Usually resolves in 5-7 days

Management of shigellosis?

A

Abx not indicate for mild cases

Ciprofloxacin or azithromycin

Alternatives: amoxicillin or trimethoprim
