2

Class: Carbapenems

Beta-lactams

3

Class: Aztreonam

Monobactam

4

Spectrum: Monobactams is Aztreonam

Aerobic Gram neg rods ONLY
**Pseudomonas coverage

5

Types of infections covered by Aztreonam

Serious systemic infections with gram negative pathogens - ie meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis

6

T/F: People with a penicillin allergey can be safely treated with Aztreonam

True, no cross-recativity

7

Monobactams are resistant to:

Beta-lactamases

8

Class: Imipenem

Carbapenems

9

Class: Ertapenem

Carbapenems

10

Class: Meropenem

Carbapenems

11

Class: Doripenem

Carbapenems

12

Spectrum: Carbapenems

**Broad Spectrum**
Gram pos;
Anaerobes (aspiration pneumonia, intra-abdominal infection);
Gram neg rods including Pseudomonas

13

Are Carbapenems appropriate for empirically treating sepsis?

Yes - big gun! good for HAP and sepsis, meningitis and resistant bugs

14

What is unique about Imipenem?

It is inactivated in the renal tubule and must be administered with cilastin to avoid inactivation

15

Adverse effects: Carbapenems but mostly Imipenem

GI - Nausea and diarrhea;
Rash;
Imipenem lowers the seizure threshold in patients with renal dysfx

16

What is you best treatment option for extended spectrum beta-lactamases such as E. Coli and Klebsiella?

Carbapenems
