Flashcards in Skin Deck (36):
1

Function of Skin

- line/cover body surfaces

- protect body surfaces

- lubricate body surfaces

2

Cutaneous Membrane

- AKA= skin

- dry membrane

- outermost protective boundary

- contains epidermis + dermis

3

Synovial Membrane

- connective tissue only

- lines fibrous capsules surrounding joints

4

Serous Membrane

- thin membrane that lines: internal body cavities/organs such as: heart, lungs, + abdominal cavity

- allows for frictionless movement in a number of vital organs by serous fluid

5

Epidermis Layer

- outer layer of 2 main layers of cells that make up the skin

- mostly made up of epithelial tissue

6

Dermis Layer

- inner layer of skin

- contains blood, lymph vessels, hair follicles + glands

- produce sweat, regulate body temp + sebum (keep the skin from drying out)

- mostly made of connective tissue

7

Hypodermics

made of adipose and connective tissue

8

Melanin

yellow, brown or black pigments

9

Carotene

orange- yellow pigment from some vegetables

10

Hemoglobin

- red coloring from blood cells in dermis capillaries

- Oxygen content determines extent of red coloring

- Cyanosis

11

Cyanosis

low oxygen content creates a bluish appearance

12

Sebaceous Glands

- produce oil

- kills bacteria

- lubricant for skin

- activated at puberty

13

Swear Glands

- widely distributed in skin

- 2 types:
~ Eccrine
~ Apocrine

14

Eccrine Sweat Gland

open via duct to pore on skin surface

15

Apocrine Sweat Gland

ducts empty into hair follicles and composed of fatty acids and proteins

16

Sweat

- mostly made of water, some metabolic waste

17

Function of Sweat

- Helps dissipate heat

- Excretes waste products

- Acidic nature inhibits bacteria growth (odor)

18

Hair

- produced by hair bulb

- consists of hard keratinized epithelial cells

- melanocytes provide pigment for hair color

19

Nails

- scalelike modifications of epidermis

- heavily keratinized

- stratum basale extends beneath nail bed

- responsible for growth

- lack of pigment makes them colorless

20

Athletes Foot

caused by fungal infection

21

Boils/Carbuncles

caused by bacterial infection

22

Cold Sores

caused by virus

23

Contact Dermatitis

exposures cause allergic reaction

24

Impetigo

caused by bacterial infection

25

Psoriasis

- cause is unknown

- triggered by trauma , infection and stress

26

Burns

- tissue damage + cell death

- dangers: dehydration, circulatory shock, electrolyte imbalance

27

1st degree Burns

- epidermis is damaged

- skin is red and swollen

28

2nd degree burns

- epidermis and upper dermis are damaged

- skin is red with blisters

29

3rd degree burns

- destroys entire skin layer

- burn is white, gray or black

30

Skin Cancer

2 types:
~ Benign
~ Malignant

31

Benign

doesn’t spread

32

Malignant

- moved to other areas of body

33

Basal Cell Carcinoma

- least malignant

- most common

- arises from stratum basale

34

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

- arises from stratum spinosum

- moves to lymph nodes

- easy removal allows chance of cure

35

Malignant Melanoma

- most deadly skin cancer

- cancer of melanocytes

- moves quickly to lymph and blood vessels

- uses ABCD

36

ABCD Rule

A: asymmetry
~ 2 sides of pigmented mold don’t match

B: border of irregularity
~ borders are irregular

C: color
~ different colors in pigmented area

D: diameter
~ spot larger than 6 mm
