2

apocrine glands

under arms, groin--open to hair follicle, non odorous unless bacteria present

3

stratum corneum (horny layer)

outermost layer of epidermis; shedding dead keratinocytes

4

cellular stratum

middle layer of epidermis; contains melanocytes & living keratinocytes

5

basal layer/basement membrane

innermost layer of epidermis; basal cells continually divide creating keratinocytes

6

bulb/suprabulb (hair follicle)

extends from base of follicle to insertion of erector pili muscle

7

isthmus (hair follicle)

short section that extends from insertion of erector pili muscle to entrance of sebaceous gland duct

8

infundibulum (hair follicle)

extends from entrance of sebaceous gland duct to follicular orifice

9

vesicle

circumscribed, elevated, superficial (not into dermis), filled with serous fluid, less than 0.5cm

10

bulla

vesicle greater than 0.5cm in diameter

11

macule

circumscribed, flat discoloration, less than 0.5cm

12

papule

elevated solid lesion up to 0.5cm (wart, elevated moles, etc.)

13

plaque

circumscribed, elevated, superficial solid lesion greater than 0.5cm in diameter (often formed by the confluence of papules)

14

pustule

circumscribed collection of leukocytes and free fluid, varies in size

15

nodule

elevated, firm, circumscribed lesion; deeper in dermis than papule; 1-2cm in diameter

16

zosterform (dermatomal)

following a nerve or segment of the body

17

telangiectatic

dilated blood vessels within a lesion

18

serpiginous

snake like or wavy line track

19

reticulated

netlike or lacy

20

linear

in a line

21

keratotic

hypertrophic stratum corneum

22

iris

pink macules with purple central papules

23

discoid

disc shaped

24

confluent

Merging or running together so as to form a mass

25

circinate

semi or circular shaped

26

arcuate

shaped like a bow; curved

27

annular

ring shaped

28

Beau lines

transverse grooving (laterally across the nail)

29

onycholysis

detachement of nail from nail bed

30

paronychia

infection around the epo and perinychium
