What is an indentured servant?
kind of forced labor, worked for mostly 7 years + then free, children = free
Why didn’t this system of indentured servants work?
too expensive, more workforce needed
Why were Africans chosen as slaves?
color of their skin = punishment of god -> inferior, could easily be identified by whites
Describe the development in the 1660’s.
Poor Whites were rebelling (Bacon’s Rebellion) -> afraid of fraternity with Blacks -> had to lower status of Blacks -> fixed equation between Africans and slaves
What do the Virginia slave laws say about children from mixed relationships?
depends on mother -> if black then slave, if white then free
Why is there a passage in them talking about baptism and slavery?
question remained whether a Christian Black was equal or if his religion changed his status in any way
What happened to some slaves during the War of Independence?
those who fought for the USA: free blacks (~10.000)
Why was the topic of slavery in the draft of the Declaration of Independence but not in the final version?
didn’t want to risk a split of the Union

different economy: in North house slaves and mostly industry and manufacturing, in South field slaves and plantations
