1
Q

Waht controls the smooth muscle in the ileum

A

The activity of smooth muscles in ileum is controlled by the activity of the enteric nervous system (ENS).

2
Q

What do the parasympathetic nerves act on in ileum?

A

Parasympathetic nerves generally cause increased contraction through the action of ACh acting onmuscarinic M3 receptors

3
Q

What do the sympathetic snerves act on in the ileum?

A

sympathetic stimulation generally causes relaxation through the action of NA on adrenergic beta receptors

4
Q

What is the structure of the smooth muscle in the ileum

A

In the gut, the muscle cells are organized into dense sheets or bands. Between individual cells are nexuses (gap junctions) – low resistance pathways which allow coupling of electrical activity between cells – therefore, a number of cells can function as a single unit

5
Q

Waht is the resting potential for smooth muscle

A

Rather than one stable value, the resting potential of smoothmusclestends to oscillate from approximately -60 to -40 mV
