What does disengagement mean
It means to withdraw from involvement (social activities)
What makes older people disengage
Ill health-poor mobility or other people have Ill health
Location- friends and family are too far away
Retirement-retiring from work means less contact with people
Technology- not being able to use it
What are some negatives
This theory was made before phones, so people can be active where ever they are
-many elderly are still active with their family and friends
What does the disengagement theory belive
That older people naturally withdraw from social interactions due to their age
Families expect less from older people
Society withdraws from older people
What are some positives of this theory
-it reduces the pressure to remain socially active , thus lowing stress for older people
-it allows for a natural withdrawal from society as it says withdrawal is natural with age
