New Labour social policies

1997-2010

A
  • Working Family Tax Credits: removed a tax incentive for couples to get married; provided a tax allowance for families with children; encouraged both parents to work.
  • 2002 - Adoption and Children’s Act: Same sex couples, singles, and unmarried straights can adopt.
  • 2003 - Paid Paternity Leave: Men able to get two weeks of paid parental leave.
  • 2005 - Civil Partnership Act: Same sex relationships to be legally recognised on the same terms as marriage.

Conservative social policies

1979-1997

A
  • 1989 - The Children Act: Outlined the rights of children and protected them from harm. Emphasis put on the family; less on local services.
  • 1991/93 - The Child Support Agency: Ensured that absent fathers paid maintenance for the upbringing of their children - less money to support lone-parent families from state services.
  • 1988 - Section 28: Schools couldn’t teach or promote homosexuality. In order to maintain the nuclear family, the govt attacked a different family type.
  • Married Men’s Tax Allowance - A tax allowance for men whose wives didn’t work to encourage traditional family structures.

2010-2015

  • 2012 - Troubled Families Programme: Identified 120,000 families who were of high cost to the state and aimed at getting them back into work and education. (CON)
  • 2013/2014 - Equal Marriage: Same-sex couples were allowed to marry for the first time. (LIB)
  • Child tax credits: Became restricted to two children to discourage people on lower incomes to have a lot of children - cost cutting measure. (CON)

  • 1967: Sexual offences act legalised homosexuality for men over 21.
  • 1988: Section 28 banned the teaching and promotion of same sex families in schools.
  • 2005: Civil Partnership Act allowed gays to have relationships that are recognised on the same terms as marriage.
  • 2013/14: Equal Marriage - Same sex couples allowed to marry in the UK.

  • 1967 Abortion Act: A type of contraception - promotes sexual promiscuity.
  • 1969 Divorce Reform Act: Believe it undermines the sacredness of marriage.
  • 2002 Adoption and Children Act: Lead to a breakdown in the traditional nuclear family.
  • 2013/14 Same sex marriage: Immoral and unnatural. Marriage should be between a man and a woman.

A
  • Depending on how many children you had, the less tax you had to pay.
  • Received money from the state.
  • This was paid to the mother who was seen as the main carer - more likely to spend it on the children.
