What does Marxism assume
That a disadvantaged social class is the primary cause if crime that criminal behaviour begins at youth
According to Marx what is crime a result of
Largely it’s a result of unfavourable conditions in a community for example unemployment in single parent families
What do Marxist see crime as
See it as inevitable in a capitalist society and is used by the ruling class or bourgeois as a means of social control
What happens if people don’t conform to a capitalist society
If you don’t conform you’ll be punished by institutions like police,justice system,prison,schools,family and religion which encourage you to conform
How is crime policed
White-collar crime committed by the more powerful in society tends to be ignored whilst crimes committed by the working class such as theft and street crime is focused on by the police and is seen as serious
How are are diffrent classes policed
Marx found that the
Proletariat is heavily policed compared to the bourgeois this is because they own the means of production
Therefore proletariat are labked as criminals raising the chance of their crimes being detected
What do the government do according to Marx
They fabricate statistics to suit their own purposes this is known as the dark figure of crime,some crimes go un-reported not making it into the statistics
He found 42%of statistics presented are false and misleading
