providing conditions for someone to be put in a better situation

social support done for a mutually, beneficial relationship
Instrumental support
tangible, usually physicaly, type of assistance
Emotional support
validating and helping a person comprehend feelings
Esteem/appraisal support
legitimizes someone’s self of identity
Problem-focused coping
remedying a threatening or harmful situation
(quick treatment when facing illness) ex: headache, take advil
emotional-focused coping
expressing some type of emotional response to a situation rather than remedy or improve situation
ex: talking to a friend rather than searching for treatment
Avoidance-focused coping
attempts to disengage mentally or even physically from threatening or damaging situations
ex: refusing to see a dentist when in pain
Proactive support
helping an individual prevent or avoid problems
reactive support
responding to a problem that has occurred ex: chemotherapy after diagnosis
support groups
example of support network, used when a patient doesn’t have many people in their support network
