Flashcards in Solar System Deck (20):
1

what planet is the closest to earth

venus

2

describe Neptune's satellite system

captured KBO's and TNO's

3

what is it called when an inferior planet is on the same side of the sun as earth

inferior conjunction

4

what is it called when an inferior planet is on the opposite side of the sun as earth

superior conjunction

5

why are solar eclipses so rare

because both the earth and the moons tilted planes have to be alligned

6

what is the model of the solar system with the sum at the centre cskled

heliocentric

7

name two ALSEP instrument uses

the composition of the lunar atmosphere

&

intensity of solar wind

8

what are comets made of

rock and ice

9

which tail on a comet points downwards and why

dust tail curves because each individual dust particle Follows it's own independent solar orbit

10

What's a meteoroid

a small rocky irregular lumps of debris

11

What's a fireball

a meteor with a magnitude of -3 or brighter

12

What's a meteorite

a meteor or part of a meteor that survives it's passage through the atmosphere

13

What's a meteor shower

a dramatic increase in the number of meteors seen from a given location

14

What's a radiant

where the meteors in meteor showers appear to all come from

15

how are meteor showers named

from the constellation there radiant appears in

16

how was ceres discovered

it's recently been elevated to a dwarf planet but it was the first asteroid to be discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazza

17

where is the best place to observe inferior planets

greatest eastern elongation

18

where is the best place to observe superior planets

opposition

19

how was Uranus discovered

it was discovered by William Herschel in 1781 he had been reviewing the heavens with a telescope when he came across a star that appeared to be a small disc at first he thought it was a comet but more research informed him it was a planet

20

how was pluto discovered

there was thought to be a planet affecting Uranus's orbit so Clyde Tombaugh located the planet in 1930 (now demoted to a dwarf planet) it was then named pluto
