Flashcards in Sound Deck (19):
1

How is sound produced

Sound is produced by the vibrations created by an object

2

The movement of particles in a sound wave

The particles in a sound wave move in vibrations and can the vibration can be longitudinal and transverse

3

Sound travelling through mediums

Sound needs a medium to travel through. To travel through these mediums sound vibrates the molecules in the medium

4

Echoes

An echo is when a sound wave bouncing off something and can be heard a second or more time at the original point were the sound was created

5

Sonar

Sonar uses echoes to find how far away things are by calculating the time the echo takes to come back and converting that into a distance using the speed of the sound

7

High Pitch

High Frequency

8

Low Pitch

Low Frequency

9

Human hearing range

20hz to 20khz

10

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses high frequency sounds to scan the inside of the body

11

Infrasound

Infrasound is sound waves with frequencies that humans can’t hear

12

Pinna

The outer part of the ear that sends the sound to the auditory canal

13

Ear canal

The canal that leads to the middle ear

14

The ossicles

The smallest bones in the body that help us hear by adjusting the amplitude of sounds

15

Eardrum

The eardrum vibrates and sends the sound into the inner middle ear

16

Cochlea

The cochlea transmits the vibrations into nerve pulses which can be interpreted by the brain

18

Semicircular canals

Help you keep your balance

19

Auditory nerve

Sends the nerve impulses to the brain
