what are contact forces?
forces between 2 objects touching eachother
what is normal contact force?
an object at rest on a surface exerts force down on the surface while the surface exerts force back on them - these forces are equal
what is a non-contact force?
forces between two objects not touching eachother
what are action reaction forces?
pair of forces acting on different objects in opposite reactions
what is a force field?
the space around an object where it can affect other objects
what are different types of non-contact forces?
magnetism, static electricity, gravity
what is a free body force diagram?
shows the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the object
what can we find using a scale diagram?
resultant force
how do you work out the thrust pushing the areoplace upwards on take off?
resolving the thrust force into two component forces at right angles to eachother via scale diagram
what is a moment?
a turning force
what does the moment of the force depend on?
the size of the force and where the force is applied
what is true in relation to size of force and distance of pivot?
greater force, further it is applied from the pivot
how is the distance between the force and the pivot measured?
normal (at right angles) to the direction of the force
what is the unit for a moment?
newton meters (Nm)
what does ‘in equilibrium’ mean?
when the anti-clockwise moment from the goods is equal to the clockwise moment from the weights
