What happened to children before the age of 7?

A

Young children were usually bought up by nurses.

Q

What happened to children from the age of 7 to the age of 12?

A

The boys were taught obedience, growing in physical strength and teamwork.

The emphasis is on athletic training and physical fitness.

They can only wear light tunics, even in winter and their heads are closely shaven.

They walk in silence with their heads downwards so that they don’t get suspects of being mischievous.

Q

What happens to Spartan boys who turn from age 13 to age 18?

A

Boys are passed into “herds”, based on year groups.

They were looked after by prefects (eirenes)

Aside the physical training, they also learn traditional songs and read poetry from the Spartan poets and Homer.

Boys lived in dormitories, slept on rushes, received one garment a year and ate basic rations.

They were encouraged to steal food but would get harshly punished if they were caught.

Baths were forbidden but they were allowed to bathe in the cold River Eurotas.

What happened to Spartan boys from the age of 19 to the age of 24?

A

A boy can now become an eirene and supervise the Younger boys.

During the year, Magistrates would select the best young men, who in return could select whom they thought were the next 100 best. Selections like this had led to resentment and violence.
