Starting systems Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is a pre-engage starter
The pre-engaged starter motor is fitted with a relay valve which controls the movement of the pinion. As the starter motor is activated, the pinion is moved along the shaft. It moves until it meets the toothed ring gear, which interlocks to crank the engine. A solenoid and an actuating arm move the starter drive into the ring gear.
What is the primary function of the starting system in an automotive vehicle?
To start the engine by engaging the starter motor.
True or False: A weak battery can prevent the engine from starting.
True
Fill in the blank: The __________ connects the battery to the starter motor.
starter solenoid
What component is responsible for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy in the starting system?
Starter motor
Multiple Choice: What can cause a no-start condition? A) Dead battery B) Faulty starter C) Ignition switch failure D) All of the above
D) All of the above
What is the role of the ignition switch in the starting system?
To provide power to the starter motor and ignition system when turned to the ‘start’ position.
True or False: A faulty ignition switch can lead to intermittent starting issues.
True
What should be checked first if the engine does not crank when the key is turned?
The battery voltage and connections.
What is the purpose of the neutral safety switch?
To prevent the engine from starting in gear.
Multiple Choice: Which of the following is NOT part of the starting system? A) Battery B) Alternator C) Starter D) Ignition switch
B) Alternator
What tool is commonly used to test the voltage of the battery?
Multimeter
True or False: A clicking sound when turning the key often indicates a problem with the starter motor.
True
Fill in the blank: The __________ provides a high current to the starter motor.
battery
What is a common symptom of a failing starter motor?
Grinding noise when attempting to start.
Multiple Choice: Which component is usually first to check if the starter motor does not engage? A) Battery B) Fuel pump C) Alternator D) Fuses
A) Battery
What does a relay do in the starting system?
It acts as a switch to control the starter motor.
True or False: All vehicles have a separate starter relay.
False
What is the function of the starter drive gear?
To engage with the engine flywheel and crank the engine.
What could a burned smell near the starter indicate?
That the starter is overheating or has failed.
Fill in the blank: A __________ can be used to bypass the ignition switch to test the starter.
jumper wire
What is the purpose of the battery cables in the starting system?
To connect the battery to the starter motor and other electrical components.
True or False: A fully charged battery should read about 12.6 volts.
True
What does the term ‘cranking voltage’ refer to?
The minimum voltage required to crank the engine properly.
