1

Strep A

Str. pyrogenes, Beta hemolytic, imetigo, cellulitis, pharyngitis, sepsis, scarlet/ rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis

2

Strep group B

Str. agalactiae, beta hemolytic, neonatal sepsis, meningitis, bacitracin resistant

3

Strep Group C

exudative pharyngitis, UTI, found with Group A, glomerulonephritis

4

Strep group D

Str. Bovis, Beta hemolytic, nonenterococcal, penicillin G, cause endocarditis, dental work, cauliflower appearance, does not grow in NaCl

5

Group D enterococcus

Ent. faecalis, faecium, normal flora of colon, skin, mucus, not killed by penicillin D, UTI, endocarditis, VRE, cauliflower appearance, +blood= colon cancer, grows in NaCl

6

non- B hemolytic

Str. pneumoniae and viridians streptococci, Str. mitis, Str. sanguis, Str. mutans

7

Str. pneumoniae

pneumonia, otitis media, meningitis, positive quellung reaction, capsular polysaccharide, lancet shape

8

Viridians streptococci

endocarditis, normal flora of oropharynx, cavities*

9

Peptostreptococci

variable hemolysis, NF of gut, mouth, vagina, anaerobic infections, Pep. magnus, pep. anaerobius

10

hyalyronic acid

found in joints, part of capsule of beta hemolytic, group A produces hyaluronidase

11

Protein F

Mediates binding to fibronectin on host cell surface

12

M protein

Major virulence factor in streptococcus pyogenes, resistant

13

Lipoteichenoic acid

major factor of adherence

14

toxins produced by group A

erythrogenic toxins (scarlet fever, TSST), streptolysin O/S, pyogenic exotoxin A, exotoxin B

15

streptokinase

activates plasminogen to form plasmin, which dissolve fibrins in clots, thrombi and emboli, can be used for MI

16

pneumolysin

binds to host cell wall sterols, cause RBC lysis, like Streptolysin O, releases toxin after it dies, allows survival of rest of bacteria

17

extracellular products

surface protein adhesins, pneumolysin, hyaluronidase, DNase, proteinases, IgA proteinases

18

serotype 3 is

associated with high mortality disease i adults

19

Pneumococcal vaccine

with and without carrier protein

20

Streptococcus/ Staphlococcus similarities and differences

both gram-positive, coccus, streptococcus in chains, staph in cluster, strep catalase negative, staph catalase positive
