Sustainability Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the three pillar of sustainability?
Social, environmental, economical
What is embodied carbon?
Carbon emission associated with the materials and construction process
What is operational carbon?
Carbon emission associated with during the operations of a building
What are the government’s carbon reduction targets?
- Net zero by 2050
- Cutting carbon emissions by 68% by 2030,
What are BREAM ratings?
Outstanding - above 85%
Excellent - above 70%
Very good - 55%
Good - 45%
Pass - £30%
Unclassified - below 30%
What are the bream credits you can obtain?
Management
Water
Energy
Transport
Health & wellbeing
Land use & ecology
Pollution
Materials
Waste
Innovation
What did you include in you LCC assessment?
Analysis of the building replacement, maintenance and operation cost of the building components over a period of time
What data did you use when producing the LCC?
BCIS Building Running Cost Online
BICS component life data
What is LCC?
Focuses only on the construction, renewal, maintenance, operation and end of life cost of the building components over a period of time
On the Learning center why did you choose to carry out a LCC over 60 years?
This was determined by the client?
On the meadowcrodt primary school project, you incorporated allowances for EV charging points. Please can you tell us about where you found the cost data for the EV charging points?
I obtained a specification from architect; I was then able to approach a supplier for a cost.
Medowcroft Primary School, there was a requirement for 50% of full time staff to have access to EV. With this in mind, did you have to make any assumptions in your cost plan regarding EV installation?
There is capacity in the existing sub to Accommodate the EV
Please can you explain the difference between embodied and operational carbon?
Embodied – during the construction process, operational – during the buildings lifetime
Please can you tell us about the three pillars of sustainability and an example of each?
Social - Creating more green space to promote the health and well being of the public
Environmental - Reducing carbon emission reducing into the atmosphere through the used of renewable energy as relay less on burning fossil fuel
Economical - Implementation of PV reducing the long term running cost of a building
What site constraints could potentially impact green technology installations?
A site that is sheltered by trees may not be suitable for PV, or similar
What are the most common environmental issue experienced on construction sites?
- Land contamination
- Noise and vibrations
- Emissions of CO2 and high energy usage
- Water pollution
- Air pollution
